Is laughter really the best medicine? As a medical clown, Matthew A. Wilson has found this to be true. Armed with whoopee cushions, music shakers and yes, a red nose — these clowns help patients *and* medical staff navigate stressful situations in the hospital. Not only do their artistic expressions entertain patients and visitors, it can also help those who are receiving care find a sense of power and control over their situation. Plus, research shows that medical clowns can also improve the work environment for nurses — helping to prevent burnout and increase the quality of care. “We’re not there merely to distract or make anyone feel better,” Wilson says. “This work affects more than the patients. It makes things better for the whole health care team.”
