These robots that can walk, climb, jump, dance — and even walk on water. Over the past decade, roboticist Dennis Hong and his team at UCLA worked to develop a fleet of advanced humanoid robots — 7 new species, to be exact — that can do all of these things and more. But why? “Rescue missions, of course,” Hong says. “But we’re really interested in the planetary applications.” Fitted with different legs, wheels and rollers, these robots can balance and climb steep surfaces, avoid obstacles and even defy-gravity! “Openness, freedom, trust, having fun and truly believing what you do can change the world.
